Renowned Poet and Classicist Anne Carson Awarded Nobel Prize in Literature

Stockholm — The Swedish Academy announced on Thursday that the prestigious 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Canadian poet, essayist, and translator Anne Carson. Known for her brilliantly idiosyncratic style that fuses ancient Greek philosophy, myth, and contemporary personal narratives, Carson has long been celebrated as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary letters.

Carson, born in Toronto in 1950, earned international acclaim with her debut book-length poem 'Autobiography of Red' in 1998, which reimagined the myth of Geryon and Herakles in a modern setting. Her subsequent works, including 'Nox', an elegiac, accordion-fold book dedicated to the memory of her brother, and 'Eros the Bittersweet', have continually redefined the boundaries of poetry, essay, and classical translation.

In its citation, the Nobel Committee noted that Carson was honored 'for her arresting and innovative poetic voice that bridges ancient antiquity and modern human consciousness.' The prize carries a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately $1 million USD).

Literary critics worldwide praised the selection. Unlike mainstream commercial writers, Carson operates at the intersection of academia and avant-garde literature, teaching classical Greek for decades while publishing works that defy traditional genre classifications. Her win marks a triumphant moment for poetry, bringing global attention back to verse that challenges intellectual complacency.
