Middle East War Impact: Air Travel Gets Costlier as Air India and Air India Express Hike Fuel Surcharge

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the looming global energy crisis are now directly impacting the pockets of common flyers, as aviation fuel costs soar to new heights. Reflecting the severe strain on the aviation sector, Air India and Air India Express have announced an increase in fuel surcharges, effectively driving up air travel costs for passengers.

Where and How Much Will the Surcharge Be?

Following the continuous rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices, the airlines decided to revise their fare structures—a move previously adopted by IndiGo as well. The revised fuel surcharges will apply to domestic routes as well as key international sectors including North America, Australia, Europe (including the UK), West Asia, and the Middle East.

For domestic flights covering a distance of 1001-1500 KM, passengers will be charged a fixed surcharge of Rs 850. For journeys exceeding 1501 KM, the surcharge will be Rs 1200. Meanwhile, international travelers heading to North America will incur a $215 surcharge, Australia-bound passengers $210, and those traveling to Europe (including the UK) will pay $135.

Why Were the Surcharges Increased?

According to industry experts, fuel accounts for roughly 40 percent of an airline's total operational cost. The geopolitical tension in the Middle East has severely disrupted fuel supply chains, pushing global crude oil and jet fuel prices upward while strengthening the US dollar. Airlines maintain that without these upward adjustments in surcharges, operating in the current macroeconomic climate would lead to severe financial setbacks.

Official Statement from the Airlines

In a statement, the airlines noted that the ongoing volatility in ATF prices is driven primarily by geopolitical developments and sustained pressure on global energy markets. The decision was taken thoughtfully to mitigate the mounting operational costs while ensuring uninterrupted, reliable services across their global networks. The revised fuel surcharges are reflected in all new bookings.
