Moving abroad does not guarantee a high-paying white-collar job on day one. Divyaj Gautam, an Indian expat residing in Sydney, shared his professional journey on social media. He detailed how he started from hourly-wage jobs at an Indian grocery store and eventually built a successful consulting practice.
From Grocery Store to High-End Consulting
Divyaj started his story from the days when he worked at an Indian grocery store in Australia, working six days a week and earning around 48,000 rupees a week. He later transitioned into retail jobs, where his weekly earnings climbed to approximately 1.05 lakh rupees. However, the real game-changer was not just switching jobs, but shifting his entire business model.
By launching his psychosocial risk consulting practice, he began charging around 2.88 lakh rupees a month from a single client. With multiple clients, his average monthly gross income skyrocketed to around 9.6 lakh rupees. After taxes, he was left with approximately 7.2 lakh rupees per month in hand.
Sydney Expenses and Net Savings
Along with his earnings, Divyaj opened up about his high cost of living in Sydney. According to him, rent alone consumed roughly 2.3 lakh rupees. Utilities cost around 33,600 rupees, groceries about 48,000 rupees, and gym memberships roughly 9,600 rupees. Dining out and leisure activities added another 48,000 to 58,000 rupees.
Combining all these living expenses brought his monthly spending to roughly 3.74 lakh rupees. With an in-hand post-tax income of 7.2 lakh rupees, he managed to save an impressive 3.45 lakh rupees every month before planning his return to India.
