For most athletes, completing a Hyrox race is merely a test of physical endurance. But for 53-year-old Devang Gandhi, crossing the finish line in Mumbai was much more than just finishing a race. Behind his grueling effort was a profound reason that drove him to completely overhaul his fitness: Devang wanted to stay strong enough to care for his special-needs son, Rudra, for the rest of his life.

Hyrox is a standardized indoor fitness competition that combines endurance running with diverse functional workout stations. Devang began his fitness transformation journey in 2024. Over the next 18 months, he shed an incredible 30 kilograms. His emotional journey was captured in a video by the Sports Lab of Masters' Union, which quickly went viral on Instagram, garnering over 1.7 million views.

The Motivation: "I Need to Outlive Him"

Explaining his powerful motivation for changing his lifestyle, Devang noted how his son's unique needs forced him to think differently about the future. He stated, "I need to outlive him. I need to outlive him so I can take care of him." He further added, "This journey is not for me, this journey is for my son Rudra."

Hyrox self-identifies as "The World Series of Fitness Racing." It features a standardized format of 8 kilometers of running interspersed with 8 distinct workout stations, including ski ergs, sled pushes, sled pulls, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carries, sandbag lunges, and wall balls.

Overcoming Severe Pain to Finish the Race

During the competition, Devang suffered a severe muscle cramp in his leg. He had to be rushed to the medical room and was initially advised not to continue the race, leaving his return uncertain.

However, driven by unmatched paternal love, Devang returned to the track and pushed through the agonizing pain to cross the finish line. The emotional video struck a chord with thousands of viewers worldwide, who flooded the comments section with heartfelt messages for Devang and Rudra.
