A special ground report by The FreeLance. Social media platforms are currently abuzz with a new fitness trend—'Lymphatic Walking'. Reels and short videos claim that walking in this specific manner helps flush out excess fluid from the body, reduces swelling and bloating, and aids in weight loss. However, like any viral trend, it is crucial to uncover the truth behind these claims. We spoke with Dr. Sanchayan Roy, Senior Consultant of Internal Medicine at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Delhi, to understand the science.
What is the Lymphatic System and its Connection to Walking?
Dr. Sanchayan Roy explains that the lymphatic system is the body's network that maintains fluid balance and supports the immune system. Unlike the heart, it lacks a central pump to move fluids. Therefore, muscle activity and breathing drive the lymph flow. When we walk, muscles contract and relax, putting pressure on lymph vessels to move the fluid forward. Deep breathing alters internal chest and abdomen pressure, aiding this natural process.
How is Lymphatic Walking Different from Normal Walking?
- Purpose and Pace: Normal walking aims to burn calories and keep the heart and lungs healthy. Lymphatic walking involves a slow, comfortable pace focusing on deep, controlled breathing and rhythmic arm-leg movements.
- Technique: Posture is kept upright with deliberate arm swings to activate upper body lymph nodes.
- Weight Loss Impact: It is not a direct weight-loss magic trick. However, regular practice increases physical activity and supports metabolic health, indirectly aiding weight management.
Experts advise that while light walking is generally safe, individuals with severe health conditions should consult a doctor before adopting new routines. Beyond social media claims, moderation and correct technique remain the true keys to health benefits.
