Have you ever heard of the 'Miracle Tree'? It might sound new, but if we call it Moringa or Sahjan, you will instantly recognize it. In many Indian households, its pods are consumed as a vegetable, while its leaves are counted among the most nutritious foods in the world. An on-the-ground investigation by The FreeLance explored why scientists call this tree a 'superfood'.
Moringa oleifera is a resilient tree that grows easily with minimal water. India is the largest producer of Moringa, yielding around 10 to 13 million tonnes of pods annually. A 2024 review study published in the science journal 'Heliyon' noted that Moringa leaves contain bioactive compounds like flavonoids, alkaloids, and carotenoids, giving them antioxidant, anti-diabetic, and cardio-protective properties.
Expert Insights and Nutritional Value
Senior Dietitian Amrita Mishra from Delhi explains that Moringa leaves are packed with vitamins, minerals, protein, and antioxidants, earning them the 'superfood' title. They aid in blood sugar control, support heart health, strengthen bones, and improve eye health due to beta-carotene. The leaves can be easily incorporated into daily diets through soups, salads, or homemade powder dried in the shade.
