The Crucial Role of Bank Sakhis in Rural India
Bank Sakhis play a vital role in promoting financial inclusion and economic empowerment across remote villages. Operating under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), these grassroots workers bridge the gap between formal banking institutions and rural households, ensuring that financial services reach the most marginalized communities.
Despite their strenuous efforts, these women often struggle with inadequate compensation and a lack of basic workplace security. Recently, a delegation of Bank Sakhis submitted a formal memorandum to local administrative officials, outlining their pressing grievances and demanding immediate policy interventions to secure their livelihoods.
Key Demands: Salary Hike and Job Regularization
The memorandum submitted by the workers highlights five major demands, chief among them being an increase in their monthly honorarium to Rs 20,000. Additionally, they are seeking permanent job status and essential benefits comparable to those received by regular bank employees.
Bank Sakhis point out that they assist with daily banking operations, credit linkages, self-help group formations, and loan recoveries. Given the demanding nature of their responsibilities, they argue that their current earnings are disproportionately low and fail to meet the rising cost of living.
"We act as a vital bridge between banks and rural citizens, yet our financial situation remains precarious. The government must recognize our contribution and ensure a decent wage and security." — Vinay Shakya, Association President
Formation of a Local Association
To amplify their voices and negotiate effectively with authorities, the workers have formed a local association. During a recent meeting, office-bearers were elected to lead the collective advocacy efforts, signaling a unified approach to addressing their long-standing professional challenges.
