Bank Strike Averted: 5-Day Work Week Proposal Reviewed After High-Level Talks

National Bank Strike Called Off After Late-Night Agreement

The proposed three-day nationwide bank strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has been successfully averted following crucial negotiations with the Indian Banks Association (IBA). The decision came late Sunday night, bringing immense relief to millions of bank customers, businesses, and financial institutions across the country. Normal banking operations resumed seamlessly on Monday morning.

The impending strike had raised widespread concerns among common citizens, particularly because it coincided with the crucial half-yearly closing period and followed immediately after a consecutive two-day weekend holiday. Had the strike proceeded, customers would have faced a prolonged five-day disruption in financial transactions and essential banking services.

Core Demands and the Formation of a High-Level Committee

The primary catalyst behind the proposed strike was the long-pending demand for a 5-day working week, ensuring holidays on all Saturdays, alongside discussions regarding Performance Linked Incentives (PLI) for senior officers. Currently, banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month.

Following intense deliberations between IBA and UFBU representatives, it was mutually agreed to establish a high-level committee. This panel will examine the feasibility of declaring all Saturdays as holidays while balancing customer convenience and operational efficiency. Other pending issues listed in previous wage settlement memorandums will also be addressed by this committee.

Normalcy Restored Across Public and Private Sector Banks

With the strike called off in the nick of time, public sector banks, regional rural banks, and private financial institutions operated smoothly. Although some initial confusion prevailed among customers in semi-urban pockets regarding the status of the strike, banking halls quickly filled up as regular counter services resumed without interruption.

Financial analysts noted that averting the strike prevented significant hurdles for the retail sector, salary disbursements, and festive season trade liquidity. Stakeholders now await the outcome of the newly formed committee's deliberations as the banking sector moves toward more progressive structural reforms.
