Major Nationwide Bank Strike Announced for Late September
Bank customers across the country are bracing for potential disruptions as the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has proposed a nationwide strike during the final days of September 2026. Normal banking operations at branches and administrative offices are expected to be severely impacted.
Major lenders including the State Bank of India (SBI), Indian Bank, and Union Bank of India have issued advisories, urging customers to complete their essential branch-related tasks well before the strike commences.
Dates and Schedule of the Upcoming Bank Strike
The proposed strike called by UFBU is scheduled for Monday, September 28, Tuesday, September 29, and Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Coming right after the second Saturday on September 26 and Sunday on September 27, customers may face a continuous stretch of non-working days for physical banking.
Banks Urge Customers to Rely on Digital Services
With branch operations likely to come to a standstill, banks have recommended using alternative digital channels such as ATMs, internet banking, mobile banking, and UPI for everyday financial needs. However, specific services will depend on ground conditions during the strike days.
Core Demands of Bank Unions
The unions are pressing for several long-pending demands, including the implementation of a 5-day work week, revisions in performance-linked incentives, and resolution of pension-related issues. Furthermore, a subsequent continuous strike has also been notified starting October 26, 2026.
