Commercial Banks Expand Credit Reach for SMEs

Financial support and capital expansion have always been considered the backbone of the commercial world. Recently, several commercial banks have begun implementing special credit packages featuring concessionary interest rates and flexible loan terms tailored specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Along with interest rate cuts, banks are shifting their traditional approaches, leveraging business data, and designing additional financial solutions to provide capital to businesses smoothly. This move follows a credit program launched by the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) targeting economic growth factors and SMEs.

To date, 19 credit institutions have registered to participate, with their loan packages totaling a combined value of over 400,000 billion Vietnamese VND. This indicates that banks are significantly expanding their capital resources for the SME sector, reflecting changing market realities.

Shifting Strategies: Leveraging Data and Digital Platforms

In previous years, banks frequently participated in and sponsored conferences and seminars organized by media agencies or industry associations. This served as a primary medium for banks to discover and connect with SMEs possessing sound production and business plans.

However, in recent years, with the development of e-commerce and modern sales channels, the approach towards customers has evolved remarkably. Through sales data, banks now have a better basis to assess the performance of SME customers, actively approach them for loans, and offer payment and cash management services.

This trend aligns seamlessly with the practical needs of businesses. A 2026 Business Outlook study by UOB, conducted with leaders of 226 medium and large enterprises in Vietnam, reveals that rising operational costs remain a major concern for 45% of businesses.

Targeted Financial Support Across Critical Sectors

According to the study, 36% of businesses mentioned financial assistance to manage rental costs as a necessary support measure for effective operations in 2026, while 41% felt the need for solutions to optimize operational processes.

Financial assistance demand is even more pronounced in certain sectors. The survey indicates that 3 to 5 businesses in the manufacturing, engineering, and industrial sectors are seeking financial support to navigate through 2026 successfully.

BVBank, for instance, is implementing a concessionary loan package with a total limit of 2,500 billion VND, offering interest rates at least 1% per year lower than general market rates. This capital focuses heavily on SMEs, household businesses, agriculture, rural sectors, high-tech enterprises, and emerging digital industries.

Economic Impact and Future Outlook

According to data from the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), by the end of August 2026, credit across the entire system increased by 10.24% compared to the end of 2025. During the same period, credit extended to SMEs grew by 12.37%, surpassing the overall credit growth rate of the entire banking sector.

"If a business has a strong foundation, a clear business plan, and transparent cash flow from its operations, it will be fully capable of securing loans at very reasonable interest rates." — Dinh Duc Quang, Head of Currency Trading, UOB Vietnam

Experts note that while loan demand remains high, transparent and fundamentally strong businesses will continue to secure advantageous financial terms, paving the way for sustained economic expansion.
