Rising global inflation, expensive fuel, and tightening consumer budgets are now profoundly influencing traditional craft and carpet markets. At the four-day 'India Carpet Expo' held in Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, a significant shift in buyer preferences was clearly visible. Instead of highly expensive and ultra-luxury carpets, international buyers showed a strong inclination toward budget-friendly and practical floor coverings.
Global Economic Uncertainty and Shifting Trends
Looking at the current global economic climate, inflation is on the rise, and consumers in many countries are exercising greater financial caution. When purchasing home decor items, international buyers are increasingly opting for cost-effective alternatives that offer great aesthetics without straining their finances. This exact trend dominated the proceedings at the Bhadohi expo.
The prestigious four-day event welcomed 447 international buyers and representatives from 65 countries, including 216 foreign buyers who visited the venue in person. Around 223 carpet exporters from across India—spanning Kashmir, Jaipur, Bikaner, Agra, Kolkata, Panipat, Varanasi, Mirzapur, and Bhadohi—displayed both traditional craftsmanship and modern contemporary designs.
New-Age Entrepreneurs and Export Projections
According to Carpet Export Promotion Council Chairman Mukesh Gomber, the business inquiries generated during the expo hold the potential to translate into over Rs 500 crore worth of export business in the near future. While several exporters secured direct orders, many others received promising leads expected to materialize into substantial trade deals in the coming months.
Significantly, the expo also highlighted the rise of new-age young entrepreneurs, such as MBA-holder Neha and 28-year-old corporate-turned-entrepreneur Shraddha Mishra, who proved how modern expertise and psychological insights are successfully transforming the traditional carpet manufacturing landscape.
