Amarinder Singh, who ruled Punjab for years with considerable political clout, found himself caught in an internal party crisis when the leadership decided to initiate a leadership change in the state. According to him, the writing was already on the wall, and the shifting political dynamics within the organization made it clear that his tenure was coming to an end. This realization prompted him to make a dramatic move by handing over his resignation directly to the party high command.
The Late Night Call and The Final Decision to Step Down
Recalling the dramatic hours leading up to his resignation, the former Chief Minister revealed that when he initially offered to step down, the party leadership hesitated and asked him to continue, citing the upcoming assembly elections. However, the situation shifted drastically within days when he received a fresh call asking him to resign immediately.
Singh stated that he told the party president it was her organization, and if she wished for him to step aside, he would comply without hesitation. Moments later, he contacted the state governor and formally submitted his resignation, effectively ending his stint as the head of the state government.
Why Joining BJP Was the Only Viable Option Left
Following his unceremonious exit from Congress, Singh faced immense pressure from his supporters to chart a new independent political course. This led to the formation of a regional outfit, which unfortunately failed to gain traction or make a significant electoral impact. With his own party struggling on the ground, his political options narrowed down significantly.
Explaining the rationale behind aligning with the ruling national party, Singh remarked that returning to Congress was entirely out of the question, and rejoining the Akali Dal was never an option given his historical departure during Operation Black Thunder in 1984.
"We really had no other option. We were not going back to Congress, and I did not want to rejoin the Akali Dal,"he noted, emphasizing that merging with the BJP was the only logical step remaining under those constraining circumstances.
