When discussing the civil services examination in India, having one or two bureaucrats in a single family is considered a massive achievement. However, the family of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar takes this to an unprecedented level. With multiple IAS, IRS, and IPS officers, this family stands out as one of the most intellectually and administratively accomplished households in the country.
Heading this remarkable lineage is CEC Gyanesh Kumar, a 1988-batch Kerala cadre IAS officer. He graduated from IIT Kanpur and later earned a degree from the Harvard Institute for International Development. His father, Dr. Subodh Kumar Gupta, served as a Chief Medical Superintendent before retirement.
High-Achieving Daughters and Sons-in-Law
The legacy continues with his daughters. Medha Rupam, Gyanesh Kumar's elder daughter, secured the 10th rank in the 2014 UPSC civil services examination. She is an Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer and a state-level shooting champion. Her husband, Manish Bansal, is also a 2014-batch IAS officer who secured the 53rd rank nationwide. Both met during their foundational training at LBSNAA.
The younger daughter, Abhishree, is an IRS officer from the 2017 batch, an alumna of St. Stephen's College, Delhi. Her husband, Akshay Labroo, is a 2017-batch IAS officer currently managing key administrative postings.
