Government Steps in Ahead of Nationwide Bank Strike

Banking operations across the country are facing a potential disruption as major bank employee unions have announced a nationwide strike towards the end of the month. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) is proceeding with its protest over long-pending demands, which is expected to impact routine branch operations, cash deposits, and clearing services.

To mitigate potential financial hardships for citizens and government employees, the administration has rolled out proactive measures to keep essential financial channels accessible and ensure timely disbursements.

Advance Salary Disbursement for Central Employees

In a major relief for millions of central government employees, defense personnel, postal workers, and pensioners, the Ministry of Finance has issued clear directives. According to an office memorandum by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), the salary and pension for September will be processed and credited to employee accounts in advance on September 25.

Usually, government salaries are credited on the last working day of the month. However, anticipating delays due to the impending bank strike, this special arrangement has been put in place to ensure financial convenience for households.

Key Demands Behind the Union Protests

The primary grievances raised by the bank employee associations include the long-standing demand for a five-day work week across the banking sector and modifications or withdrawal of the Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Despite conciliation meetings held before labor authorities, a conclusive agreement could not be reached, leaving the strike notice active.

RBI Approves Special Working Hours on Sunday

To ease pressure on banking services, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has permitted all designated bank branches, currency chests, and offices to remain operational on Sunday, September 27. This ensures that customers have an adequate window to complete essential banking transactions before the three-day shutdown commences.
