Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay Acts As Bus Conductor
In a surprising and heartwarming incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay stepped into the role of a bus conductor during a public commute in Chennai. Marking the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Chief Minister boarded a state-operated bus to launch the expanded phase of a major welfare initiative, interacting directly with everyday commuters.
Videos and visuals of the Chief Minister issuing zero-fare tickets inside a packed public transport vehicle quickly went viral across digital platforms. Commuters, particularly college students travelling on the route, were pleasantly surprised by his down-to-earth gesture, with some even offering chocolates in exchange for their tickets.
Expansion of the 'Vetri Payanam Thottam' Initiative
The high-profile event marked the rollout of the upgraded 'Vetri Payanam Thottam' scheme, designed to provide seamless mobility options for women and transgender individuals throughout the southern state. Under this newly expanded framework, free travel privileges have been extended to several additional categories of state transport buses.
Previously restricted to basic ordinary city services, the zero-fare facility now encompasses deluxe, express, and select hill route services operated by state transport corporations. This broad expansion ensures that remote communities and long-distance female commuters can also reap the financial benefits of the policy.
Impacting Over 8.4 Million Women Daily
Government estimates project that approximately 8.43 million women will utilize the expanded transport scheme on a daily basis. With a fleet of over 12,695 state-run buses integrated into the program, daily commuters can travel without worrying about escalating ticket costs.
Economists and policy analysts note that transportation expenses often constitute a substantial burden for working-class households. Alleviating this recurring cost enables families to reallocate financial resources toward education, nutrition, and personal development.
Zero Income Caps and Flexible Travel Rules
Administration officials highlighted that the scheme is completely unhindered by strict income eligibility criteria or caps on daily trips. Any woman or transgender resident can utilize the public bus network repeatedly throughout the day without incurring financial penalties or paperwork hurdles.
State Transport Minister A. Vijay Thamizhalan Parthiban emphasized that mobility is a fundamental pillar of economic empowerment. He stated that transport costs should never act as a barrier preventing individuals from pursuing employment or academic goals.
