The Rising Cost of Gold and Heavy Tax Burdens
Gold has always held a special place in Indian households, especially during weddings and festive seasons. However, soaring prices have made purchasing genuine gold challenging for the common citizen. With international and domestic bullion rates hitting record highs, purchasing certified gold through formal channels has become an expensive affair.
Adding to the burden, high import duties and the standard Goods and Services Tax (GST) have driven up the final retail cost significantly. To counter these steep prices, an informal parallel market has expanded where buyers increasingly rely on cash transactions to bypass formal taxation systems.
The Mechanics of Cash-Based Gold Purchases Without Receipts
According to recent market insights and financial reports, buyers looking to bypass formal banking channels are turning towards informal dealers who offer lucrative discounts for cash deals. Since these transactions leave no official paper trail, bullion traders manage to bypass regulatory tracking entirely.
Wholesale buyers can secure discounts of up to 6% on prevailing market rates by dealing strictly in cash without formal invoices. At the retail level, customers engaging in aggressive bargaining can save up to Rs 10,000 per 10 grams depending on their relationship with the local jeweler.
Tax Evasion and the Trader's Calculations
The core incentive behind this parallel market is the avoidance of substantial duties and taxes. When a jeweler executes a cash transaction without generating a tax invoice, they evade both custom tariffs and local sales taxes. A portion of this massive tax saving is then passed down to the customer in the form of a discount.
Financial experts point out that high import tariffs naturally incentivize market participants to look for alternative supply chains outside official government-monitored channels, creating persistent regulatory challenges.
Hidden Risks for the Everyday Consumer
While saving Rs 10,000 on a 10-gram purchase might seem like a smart financial move, it exposes the buyer to severe long-term risks. Gold bought without a proper receipt lacks mandatory BIS hallmark certification, leaving no legal assurance of its purity.
Consumers risk receiving adulterated or lower-karat metal, and they may face immense difficulty when attempting to resell or exchange uncertified ornaments in the future. Therefore, opting for short-term savings through informal channels can eventually translate into a major financial loss.
