Government scheme turns boon for farmers
Agriculture forms the backbone of the Indian economy, and with changing times, modern technology is rapidly replacing traditional farming methods. However, advanced agricultural machinery and tractors are often expensive, making it difficult for small and marginal farmers to afford them independently. To address this challenge, the government has been actively promoting agricultural mechanization through financial assistance programs.
Under the 'Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization' (SMAM) scheme, the government aims to provide financial support to farmers for purchasing expensive farming equipment, thereby reducing cultivation costs and increasing farm efficiency.
Understanding the SMAM Scheme and Subsidies
Running since 2014-15, the SMAM scheme offers substantial financial aid ranging from 20% to 50% on tractors and various other agricultural tools. According to official data up to July 2026, over 2.16 million farming machines have been distributed across the country under this scheme, with a total financial assistance of approximately Rs 9,404.47 crore disbursed to farmers.
For instance, if a farmer purchases a tractor priced at Rs 6 lakh, the government subsidy can reduce the effective cost by up to 50%, bringing the net price down to roughly Rs 3 lakh.
Eligible Agricultural Equipment
The scheme covers a wide range of machinery including tractors, power tillers, rotavators, cultivators, harrows, seed drills, multi-crop planters, reapers, threshers, harvesters, and horticultural tools. These machines significantly reduce labor dependency and save valuable time for farmers.
Required Documents and Application Process
To apply for the subsidy, farmers need essential documents such as an Aadhaar card, passport-size photographs, land records (Record of Rights), a bank passbook copy linked with DBT, and a cost certificate from an authorized dealer. Farmers must strictly follow the online DBT workflow, which requires registering and applying on the portal before purchasing any machinery from an authorized dealer.
