Gas Crisis Averted: Record LNG Supply Reaches Through Strait of Hormuz

Remarkable Recovery in LNG Traffic Through Strait of Hormuz

Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and conflicts in West Asia, a major sigh of relief has emerged for the global energy market. The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical maritime choke points, has witnessed a steady revival in the movement of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. According to international shipping data and energy analysts, a record number of gas cargoes successfully cleared this strategic corridor in September, significantly reducing fears of a major energy disruption for importing nations like India.

Eric Yep, Principal Analyst at S&P Global Energy, reported that a total of 19 LNG cargoes successfully transited through the Strait of Hormuz in September. Out of these, 13 vessels originated from Qatar, while 6 departed from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These figures have largely dispelled earlier market apprehensions that escalating hostilities in the region might completely choke off energy supplies.

Experts note that the sharp surge in vessel movements observed during the final fortnight of September bodes well for the coming weeks. If this positive momentum persists through October, LNG traffic through the corridor could recover up to 25 percent compared to pre-war normal levels, providing substantial cushion to emerging economies.

Insights From Shipping Data Firm Kpler

Prominent shipping and commodity data provider Kpler has also corroborated that LNG traffic exiting the Strait of Hormuz remained robust throughout September. According to Kpler's tracking data, as many as 21 LNG cargoes moved out of the strait during the month, compared to just 15 recorded in June.

The report highlighted that several LNG carriers associated with Qatar's state-run energy giant, QatarEnergy, sailed through the corridor over the past few weeks. While some of these vessels were fully loaded with liquefied gas, others were making their return journeys in ballast condition. This steady operational rhythm demonstrates that maritime agencies and energy corporations have successfully adapted security protocols to mitigate regional risks.

Market observers believe that the uninterrupted movement of these vessels injects much-needed confidence into buyers and investors worldwide, helping to stabilize energy prices that have experienced severe volatility in recent months due to Middle Eastern turmoil.

Qatari LNG Vessels Arrive Safely on India's Western Coast

For India, this maritime development holds profound strategic significance. Three prominent LNG carriers linked to Qatar's Ras Laffan gas terminal—namely Al Kharaitiyat, Al Gharrafa, and Milaha Qatar—were recently tracked exiting the Hormuz strait. Indian maritime and energy agencies closely monitored the safe passage of these vessels.

Reports indicate that Al Kharaitiyat and Al Gharrafa appeared near India's western coastline within days of traversing the strait. Meanwhile, the vessel Milaha Qatar successfully completed its journey to the Indian western coast and docked at the Hazira Port in Gujarat, where it commenced unloading its LNG cargo.

"Despite the challenging security environment in West Asia, the continuous transit of gas cargoes through the Strait of Hormuz proves that alternative navigation safeguards have successfully shielded global energy supply chains."— Energy Market Analyst, The FreeLance

As India imports a substantial portion of its natural gas requirements, Qatar remains a vital trade partner. The unhindered discharge of LNG at Hazira Port guarantees that domestic industrial units and power generation facilities will not face fuel shortages.

Festive Season Relief for Domestic and Industrial Consumers

India is currently stepping into its peak festive season, a period traditionally marked by a sharp spike in energy and fuel demand. Increased consumption across households, commercial establishments, and transport networks requires steady fuel supplies. Any disruption in gas availability during this window could have triggered a dual blow of inflation and scarcity.

However, the smooth flow of shipping traffic along the Hormuz route ensures that domestic gas inventories remain secure. Industry experts remain optimistic that barring any sudden geopolitical escalations in October, India's energy supply will stay well-buffered, allowing the economy to cruise smoothly through the festive months without supply shocks.
