India IIP Growth Reaches 8 Percent in August
India's industrial output witnessed a significant surge in August 2026, reflecting positive momentum in the country's economic activities. According to the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by 8 percent year-on-year during the month, improving from the revised 7.4 percent growth recorded in July.
The robust performance is primarily attributed to strong output in the manufacturing sector and electricity generation. Economists note that this steady growth ahead of the festive season is a healthy sign for overall macroeconomic stability and reflects sustained domestic demand.
Manufacturing Sector Records Strong Performance
The manufacturing sector, which holds the largest weight in the IIP, expanded by 9 percent in August. This marks the third consecutive month of 8 percent or higher growth for the sector. Out of 23 manufacturing industry groups, 18 registered positive growth during the month.
Significant surges were observed in the production of motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers, which grew by 25.2 percent. Electrical equipment manufacturing recorded a massive growth of 30.9 percent, while other transport equipment saw a 25.3 percent increase, driven largely by demand for two-wheelers and railway rolling stock.
Power Sector Boosts Output While Mining Lags
The electricity and gas supply sector posted a strong growth of 12.3 percent, supported by higher power demand across various regions. Water supply, sewerage, and waste management also grew by 6.3 percent. However, the mining and quarrying sector faced a contraction, recording a decline of 5.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
Capital Goods and Consumer Durables Show Strength
Use-based classification data reveals that capital goods production grew by 16.9 percent, and intermediate goods increased by 13.7 percent. Consumer durables saw an 11.1 percent rise, while infrastructure and construction goods grew by 6.4 percent, indicating steady investment and consumer sentiment.
