A Technological Leap Against Dengue in Kerala
In a significant breakthrough for public health, scientists at the Institute of Advanced Virology (IAV) in Kerala have developed a cutting-edge 'Dengue Early Warning System' (DEWS). Utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning, this innovative model is designed to predict potential shifts and outbreaks of dengue fever at the district level, shifting the medical approach from reactive treatment to proactive prevention.
Combining Machine Learning with Meteorological Data
The DEWS platform integrates epidemiological information from Kerala's State Surveillance Unit with comprehensive weather data provided by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Trained on nearly six years of historical data ranging from March 2020 to February 2026, the model evaluates critical variables such as vector breeding patterns, temperature fluctuations, humidity levels, and historical infection rates to generate accurate weekly forecasts.
Categorizing Health Risks for Targeted Action
Unlike generalized statewide forecasts, this system delivers granular, district-specific risk assessments. The resulting hazard levels are systematically categorized into four distinct groups: very high, high, moderate, and low. This clear categorization enables public health officials and local administrators to deploy targeted vector control measures, awareness campaigns, and hospital preparations precisely where they are needed most before an outbreak can escalate.
