Major setback for BJP in Kerala: Ex-DGP R. Sreelekha resigns as councillor over mayoral snub

A Major Political Twist in Kerala Capital

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala is facing an unexpected internal crisis in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. Just months after scripting history by dismantling a four-decade-old Left stronghold to capture the municipal corporation, the party is now grappling with open dissent. R. Sreelekha, a prominent leader and Kerala's first female Director General of Police (DGP), has resigned from her councillor post, creating significant ripples in the state's political landscape.

Political analysts view this development as a serious jolt to the party's local leadership. Sreelekha's resignation is not merely an administrative exit; it highlights underlying tensions regarding pre-election commitments, internal promises, and leadership choices within the saffron camp. Top party bosses have stepped in to manage the damage and prevent any destabilization of the newly formed municipal board.

The Mayoral Controversy and Broken Promises

The core of the dispute revolves around the coveted mayoral seat. Reports suggest that Sreelekha was initially hesitant to contest the local body elections. However, after persistent persuasion by senior party leaders, she agreed to enter the electoral fray. It is widely reported that she was given assurances that she would be the face of the party in the municipal corporation and that her name would be strongly considered for the mayor's office if they won.

Riding high on popularity, Sreelekha secured a resounding victory from the Sasthamangalam ward. However, following the election, the party leadership chose V.V. Rajesh for the mayor's post. Although she initially expressed mild disappointment while vowing to continue working for her voters, the simmering discontent finally culminated in her resignation.

Numerical Impact on the Municipal Council

The Thiruvananthapuram municipal corporation has a total of 101 seats, requiring 51 votes for a simple majority. In the recent elections, the BJP secured 50 seats, falling just one short of the majority mark. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) won 29 seats, and the Congress-led UDF secured 19. With the support of a single independent councillor, the BJP managed to reach the 51-mark and form its maiden civic administration, with V.V. Rajesh securing 51 votes.

If Sreelekha's resignation takes full effect, the BJP's strength within the council will drop to 48, weakening the party's absolute control and making the municipal numbers precarious. This numerical vulnerability is precisely why the state leadership is working frantically to persuade her to take back her resignation before the official procedures conclude.

A Distinguished Career from IPS to Politics

R. Sreelekha holds a stellar reputation as Kerala's pioneering female IPS officer. Serving in law enforcement for over three decades, she retired as DGP in 2020. In October 2024, she formally joined the BJP, and the party quickly appointed her as a vice-president of the state unit. Her induction was heavily publicized as a major coup for the party in southern India. However, this high-profile fallout has now presented the party with a unique administrative and political challenge.
