New Development Blueprint Formulated for Lord Buddha's Birthplace
A comprehensive and strategic roadmap has been prepared for the holistic development of Greater Lumbini, the sacred birthplace of Lord Buddha, while strictly safeguarding its religious sanctity and historical heritage. The primary objective of this new initiative is to ensure that future infrastructural developments do not compromise the spiritual and tranquil identity of the region.
Experts and policymakers emphasize that Lumbini is not merely a tourist destination but a global epicenter of faith for millions of Buddhists worldwide. Therefore, any development work undertaken here requires meticulous planning. Under the new roadmap, projects will go beyond basic tourism and infrastructure, actively incorporating environmental preservation and local livelihood needs.
This initiative is being spearheaded through a collaborative effort involving the Government of Nepal, UNESCO, the Lumbini Development Trust, and the World Bank. Over 150 delegates participated in a high-level international conference to finalize these conservation and long-term development priorities.
International Conference Shapes the Strategic Vision
To establish a well-structured future for Lumbini, a three-day international conference was held, bringing together global experts, policymakers, local community representatives, and hospitality entrepreneurs. Following extensive discussions, key priorities for the sustainable development of Greater Lumbini were successfully outlined.
The conference underscored that Lumbini cannot be developed like a standard commercial tourist zone. The peaceful Buddhist ambiance of the sacred garden, religious faith, and cultural landscapes must form the foundational bedrock of all future planning.
Participants recommended that baseline infrastructure should only be developed after conducting thorough hydrological studies, drainage assessments, and comprehensive environmental impact evaluations to protect the delicate ecosystem.
Expanding the Horizon to Tilaurakot, Devdaha, and Ramgram
The Greater Lumbini development plan extends far beyond the Maya Devi Temple and the sacred garden. It incorporates crucial archaeological and historical sites such as Tilaurakot-Kapilvastu, Devdaha, and Ramgram into a broader preservation and tourism network.
Delegates visited these historic locations to understand current conservation statuses, pilgrim requirements, and local community challenges. Integrating these sites into a unified Buddhist circuit aims to enhance visitor experiences while preserving historical integrity.
Empowering Local Communities and Ensuring Ministerial Commitment
Local communities are viewed as active partners rather than mere beneficiaries in this developmental journey. Strengthening coordination between municipalities, the Lumbini Development Trust, and local stakeholders is central to the implementation strategy.
