Massive Blast Rocks MRPL Refinery in Mangaluru
A devastating industrial accident struck the coastal city of Mangaluru on Wednesday, as a massive explosion ripped through the Mangaluru Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) complex located near Jokatte. The sudden blast sent shockwaves across the region, triggering immediate panic among local residents and raising serious questions regarding industrial safety protocols.
Thick plumes of dark black smoke billowed high into the sky from the plant premises, visible from several kilometers away. The intense flames and smoke created an atmosphere of terror in the surrounding neighborhoods. Local residents immediately alerted the police and emergency services. The internal firefighting and disaster management teams of the refinery rushed to the spot to contain the blaze, but battling the raging fire proved to be a challenging task.
Contract Worker Killed and Eight Injured
Tragically, the massive explosion claimed the life of a 30-year-old contract worker identified as Manish Karkera, a resident of Mulki who was working at the facility under a contract. Following the containment of the fire, search operations led to the recovery of a severely burned body, which was later identified as Manish. The news brought immense grief to his family and the local community.
In addition to the fatality, eight other individuals sustained injuries and burns. All injured persons were swiftly rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. Doctors stated that while most are stable, at least one person remains in critical condition under close medical supervision. Senior police and administrative officials visited the site and hospital to review the situation.
How the Accident Occurred: CHTU Cold Separator Rupture
According to preliminary reports and statements from management, the incident occurred inside the Coker Hydrotreatment Unit (CHTU) of the refinery. Around noon on Wednesday, while operations were underway, a cold separator operating under high pressure suddenly ruptured. The massive pressure release triggered an immediate and ferocious fire.
Experts note that handling high-pressure equipment in petrochemical plants requires extreme caution, and even minor technical failures can result in catastrophic disasters. Rudolf V. Noronha, Chief General Manager of MRPL, confirmed that the company's internal emergency response teams acted swiftly, bringing the fire completely under control after nearly two and a half hours of intensive firefighting efforts.
Tremors Felt in Nearby Areas, Homes Damaged
The impact of the explosion was not confined to the refinery boundaries. Residents living in adjacent neighborhoods such as Bajpe, Kalavaru, Baikampady, Jokatte, Surathkal, and Katipalla experienced intense tremors resembling an earthquake. The sheer concussive force of the blast shook residential houses.
Windowpanes and glass doors in numerous houses shattered, household items were knocked off shelves, and even the glass panels of the Jokatte Village Panchayat building were broken. Furthermore, roof tiles of a nearby church were damaged by the shockwave, leaving the local population deeply traumatized by the unexpected ordeal.
Police Register FIR Against Management and Unit Head
Acting swiftly on complaints, the Surathkal police have registered a formal First Information Report (FIR) against the head of the Coker Hydrotreatment Unit and the MRPL management. Legal proceedings have been initiated under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections 287, 125(b), and 106, focusing on negligence and endangerment of human life.
Authorities and industrial safety inspectors are conducting a thorough investigation to determine whether protocol lapses or technical malfunctions led to the disaster. This unfortunate event has once again highlighted the urgent need for stringent safety audits and robust worker protection measures across heavy industrial complexes.
