A major controversy has erupted following allegations of police brutality against NSUI activist Athira C during a protest in New Delhi demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). Athira, a Delhi University student hailing from Kerala, filed a formal complaint with the Kerala Director General of Police (DGP), prompting the police to register a zero FIR in the matter.
Details of the FIR and Allegations
Based on Athira's complaint, the Kerala Police registered the case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to criminal force against a woman, causing hurt, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. Since the alleged incident occurred in New Delhi while the complaint was lodged in Kerala, a 'Zero FIR' was filed, which will now be transferred to the Delhi Police for further investigation.
Athira alleged that no woman police personnel were present inside the bus when she and other protesters were detained. According to her, when she inquired about the absence of female constables, she was subjected to physical assault outside the Connaught Place police station, resulting in severe injuries to her eye and ear.
Rahul Gandhi Raises the Issue
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, brought national attention to the incident during a press conference. He claimed that due to the severe injuries sustained during the police action, Athira has lost hearing in one of her ears. Gandhi strongly criticized the authorities and questioned the handling of peaceful protesters by law enforcement agencies.
