Empowering Traditional Craftsmen Across the Country
India's rich heritage has always been sustained by its skilled traditional artisans, craftsmen, and handloom workers. From goldsmiths and blacksmiths to potters and weavers, these communities form the backbone of the grassroots economy. However, competing in the modern market with traditional methods posed significant challenges for them. To address this, the central government launched the Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Yojana, aimed at providing comprehensive support to these workers.
The primary goal of the scheme is to integrate traditional artisans into the mainstream economy, enhancing both the quality and reach of their products. By offering targeted interventions, the initiative ensures financial inclusion and skill enhancement for families dependent on age-old crafts.
Who is Eligible for the PM Vishwakarma Scheme?
The scheme is specifically curated for traditional trades based on hands-on skills. Currently, 18 specific trades have been identified under the initiative. These include carpenters, boat makers, armorers, blacksmiths, hammer and tool kit makers, locksmiths, goldsmiths, potters, sculptors, and stone breakers.
Additionally, cobblers, leather workers, basket and broom makers, traditional weavers, washermen, tailors, and fishing net makers are also eligible. Applicants must be traditionally engaged in the family-based business and possess a verified skill set in their respective domains.
Skill Upgradation and Toolkit Incentives
Beyond financial aid, the program focuses heavily on capacity building. Selected beneficiaries undergo rigorous basic and advanced training programs. During the training period, participants receive a daily stipend to compensate for their lost daily wages.
Upon completion of the training, beneficiaries are provided with a Rs 15,000 grant to purchase modern toolkits. This enables them to transition from obsolete tools to advanced equipment, significantly improving their daily output and efficiency.

Easy Access to Collateral-Free Loans
Capital is often the biggest hurdle for micro-entrepreneurs. Recognizing this, the scheme offers collateral-free enterprise development loans of up to Rs 3 lakh. The financial assistance is disbursed in two tranches with subsidized interest rates, making it exceptionally easy for artisans to scale their businesses.
Digital Integration and Global Reach
To ensure market connectivity, every registered artisan receives a PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card. This official recognition facilitates their integration with digital commerce platforms, opening up new avenues for marketing, branding, and selling their products globally.
