Pratyusha Banerjee Suicide Case: Bombay High Court Discharges Rahul Raj Singh After 10 Years

A Decade-Long Legal Battle Concludes

In a significant legal development in the tragic suicide case of television actress Pratyusha Banerjee, the Bombay High Court has discharged her former boyfriend, Rahul Raj Singh, from all charges. The high-profile case, which sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, has finally reached a major milestone after nearly ten years of legal proceedings.

Pratyusha Banerjee, widely recognized for her stellar portrayal of 'Anandi' in the hit daily soap 'Balika Vadhu', was found dead inside her Goregaon apartment in Mumbai on April 1, 2016. Her untimely demise left millions of fans and colleagues grief-stricken, triggering extensive police investigations and a prolonged courtroom battle.

The Crucial Final Phone Call

During the hearings, the bench led by Justice Shivkumar Dighe considered the final telephonic conversation between Pratyusha and Rahul, recorded shortly before the tragic incident, as the turning point of the case. The court noted that the transcript clearly showed Rahul attempting to dissuade the actress from taking any extreme step.

According to the court records, Rahul had informed Pratyusha during the call that he had turned his car around and was heading back to meet her. Transcripts also revealed that the actress was under tremendous mental distress and had been confiding in several individuals, including her parents, regarding her state of mind.

Allegations and Legal Defense

Following the incident, Pratyusha's parents had leveled serious accusations against Rahul, claiming he subjected the actress to physical, mental, and financial harassment, which ultimately drove her to suicide. Consequently, an FIR was registered against him under various sections including abetment of suicide and criminal intimidation.

Defending Rahul in court, his legal counsels argued strenuously that the final interaction proved his intent was to prevent the tragedy rather than abet it. The defense maintained that he was actively trying to reach out and pacify her when the incident occurred.

Conclusion of the Trial

The Dindoshi Sessions Court had earlier rejected Rahul's discharge petition, paving the way for formal framing of charges. However, challenging that order in the Bombay High Court brought him relief as the higher judiciary found insufficient grounds to sustain charges of abetment of suicide under the current legal purview, thereby bringing an end to the decade-long criminal trial.
