Political Storm Over Online Form-6 Modifications
A fresh political controversy has erupted in the country over voter registration procedures after senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi questioned the role of the Election Commission and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) regarding alleged unauthorized changes in online Form-6. The opposition leader has demanded complete transparency on who authorized these modifications in the software.
The dispute gained momentum following investigative media reports highlighting internal disagreements among top election commissioners regarding administrative procedures and data additions. While political parties are using this opportunity to question the integrity of electoral management, authorities have maintained their stand that statutory rules remain fully intact.
Rahul Gandhi's Direct Queries to TCS and the Poll Panel
Stepping up his attack, Rahul Gandhi took to public forums to question the accountability of the private tech giant involved in handling election software. He emphasized that statutory forms governed by electoral laws cannot be modified without proper legal amendments and official approvals.
He publicly questioned the chain of command, asking who in the poll panel instructed TCS to implement these changes and who signed off on the approvals within the corporate setup. These queries have triggered a wider debate on corporate involvement and data security in sensitive democratic processes.
Internal Dissents and Statutory Clarifications
Media reports had previously claimed that some election commissioners had raised objections on multiple occasions regarding additional declarations being tagged to statutory forms without formal rule changes. However, the commission later emphasized that all decisions were taken collectively to address administrative requirements during special revision drives.
According to the poll panel, the additional declarations were temporary supplements meant specifically for the duration of the revision campaigns and were subsequently removed once the exercise concluded in respective jurisdictions, ensuring that standard rules under the Registration of Electors Rules continue to govern the process smoothly.
