Veteran actor and director Raju Kher, known for his remarkable work in Hindi cinema and television, recently bared his soul about the most challenging period of his life. In a candid conversation, the younger brother of renowned actor Anupam Kher shared how a disastrous professional setback reduced him to complete bankruptcy overnight, forcing him to sell his house and lose every penny he had earned.
The Ill-Fated TV Channel Venture That Ruined Everything
Appearing on a podcast, Raju Kher recalled the days when a major television network was supposedly launching with massive backing from prominent investors. Eager to establish his creative footprint, Raju developed a program titled 'Life Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega,' believing this project would finally secure his financial future and stabilize his career.
To fund the production and secure a bigger 4BHK apartment where every family member could have their own space, Raju made the drastic decision to sell his existing home and pump all the proceeds into the channel venture. However, before the project could take off, the channel mysteriously vanished from the landscape, leaving behind broken promises and financial ruin.
Facing Imminent Bankruptcy and Crushed Dreams
The disappearance of the channel triggered an absolute crisis for Raju Kher. The money meant for the new flat and the production costs evaporated instantly. Left with mounting worries about how to honor his real estate commitments and feed his family, the actor found himself sinking into deep despair without any backup plan.
During this agonizing period, Raju naturally expected emotional and financial support from his elder brother, Anupam Kher. However, because Anupam himself had temporarily stepped back from acting and was navigating a lean patch, he was unable to provide financial assistance. Misinterpreting the situation, Raju initially felt resentful, believing his brother was turning a blind eye to his struggles.
A Magazine Article That Shifted Perspective
Sharing a turning point from that stressful phase, Raju recounted reading a magazine while sitting in the restroom. He came across an interview where Anupam Kher expressed a poignant wish about wishing he had a biological child of his own. That single sentence completely altered Raju's mindset.
"It made me realize that we are often so consumed by our own miseries that we fail to acknowledge what the other person is going through. We take our loved ones for granted without ever realizing the silent battles they are fighting." — Raju Kher, Actor
Reflecting on the episode, Raju emphasized that although Anupam deeply loves Sikandar as his own son, the emotional nuance of having a biological child carries a different weight. The humbling realization helped Raju shed his resentment, teaching him the invaluable lesson of empathy and mutual understanding during life's harshest trials.
