The Tough Journey of Renault Duster in the Indian Car Market
Entering and sustaining a presence in the Indian automotive market is a formidable challenge. The unique consumer preferences and intense competition make it a ruthless arena for any brand. Earlier this year, when French automaker Renault announced the comeback of its legendary SUV, the Renault Duster, it was welcomed with much enthusiasm by auto enthusiasts across the country.
Launched in March with an initial price tag of Rs 10.49 lakh, the SUV made a strong market debut. Deliveries began immediately, and the Duster recorded an impressive sale of 1,402 units in its very first month. The momentum continued into April with 2,359 units dispatched. However, the tables turned quickly as summer approached, leading to a significant slump in overall numbers.
Steep Drop in Monthly Sales Figures
By May, the sales numbers began to tumble, dropping to 1,267 units. The downward trend continued into June with barely 1,011 units sold, followed by a sharp decline to 512 units in July. The worst performance came in August, with total sales touching a low of just 406 units. Over the six-month period from March to August, total sales stood at approximately 6,957 units.
Industry experts point out that while initial excitement drove early bookings, the lack of diverse powertrain options at launch affected sustained growth. Currently, only the 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines are available, while many consumers are eagerly waiting for the highly anticipated 1.8-litre strong hybrid variant expected around the festive season.
