Supreme Court Strict On Delhi Police: Criminals Must Fear Severe Consequences

Supreme Court Takes Hard Line On Women Safety In Delhi-NCR

The Supreme Court of India has expressed deep concern and issued strong strictures against the police administration over the rising incidents of sexual violence and crimes against women in the Delhi-National Capital Region. Taking suo motu cognizance of recent harrowing incidents, the top court emphasized that merely arresting culprits after a heinous crime has been committed is not enough; the focus must decisively shift towards proactive prevention.

During the proceedings, the bench questioned the overall preparedness and alertness of law enforcement agencies. The judges remarked that paper-work and routine responses will not suffice in making streets safe for women. A robust and visible security apparatus is the need of the hour to restore public confidence in the system.

'Criminals Must Fear That Committing Such Acts Means Certain Doom'

In one of its most hard-hitting observations, the Supreme Court bench stated that individuals harboring criminal and sexual assault tendencies must feel an absolute sense of terror regarding the consequences of their actions. The court asserted that unless potential offenders realize that committing such crimes will invite severe, uncompromising retribution, the ground situation will refuse to improve.

The bench remarked,

"Create fear among anti-social elements. They should feel that if they do something now, they will be eliminated. Interact with people. You are the protectors of society." — Supreme Court Bench

The court firmly advised police personnel not to waver under potential human rights scrutiny or external pressure when dealing with hardened criminals. Unflinching firmness is required to deter such elements permanently.

Crackdown On Illegal Eateries And Dark Spots

Highlighting the vulnerability of public spaces, the court pointed out that numerous unauthorized eateries, roadside shacks, and illegal liquor vends often serve as breeding grounds for anti-social elements during late hours. Authorities were instructed to launch an immediate and relentless crackdown on such establishments.

Furthermore, the court questioned why police patrol vehicles remain stationary at fixed spots rather than continuously moving through residential sectors and vulnerable dark spots. Enhanced beat policing is vital to intercepting malicious intent before it manifests into tragedy.

Monitoring CCTV Feeds And Engaging With Citizens

Addressing technological surveillance, the apex court noted that merely installing closed-circuit television cameras is meaningless without active, round-the-clock monitoring of their feeds. Entry and exit points of public parks and transit hubs must be watched closely.

The judiciary also encouraged police officers to maintain constant communication with local residents, listening to grievances about street lighting, suspicious gatherings, and safety hazards. Public cooperation combined with aggressive policing forms the core of effective crime prevention.

Every Woman Is Our Sister, Says Supreme Court

Emphasizing the emotional and social gravity of the matter, Justice Pardiwala stated that every woman who faces harassment or assault is akin to one's own sister. Protecting them is an absolute sacred duty for the state machinery.

With upcoming festive seasons approaching, the court warned police forces to elevate their vigilance to prevent any opportunistic crimes. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on November 16, where compliance reports will be reviewed.
