Tamil Nadu Focuses on Student Health and Education
In a major welfare initiative aimed at improving the health and academic engagement of school children, the Tamil Nadu government has expanded its ambitious breakfast scheme. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay officially launched the 'Kamaraj Breakfast Scheme' for students studying in classes 6 to 8 across government-run and aided schools in the state.
Educationists and child development experts have long advocated for nutritious morning meals in schools, noting that proper nutrition significantly enhances students' concentration, physical growth, and overall classroom attendance. This step marks a major milestone in the state's educational welfare roadmap.
Launch Event Held at Government School in Chennai
The formal rollout event took place at a government middle school in Tiruvanmiyur Gandhi Gramam, Chennai. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay visited the institution personally to inaugurate the expanded program and interacted with the students as they enjoyed their morning meal.
Local representatives, senior officials from the school education department, along with numerous students and parents, participated in the event. The initiative is expected to bring immense relief to low-income and working-class families who often struggle to provide adequate morning meals before sending their children to school.
Massive Reach Across 15,454 Schools
According to official figures, the expanded phase of the scheme covers 15,454 government and aided schools throughout the state. Approximately 15 lakh 30 thousand additional students will now receive free, nutritious breakfast every school day, adding to the state's robust social safety net for children.
This initiative particularly aids students from rural and semi-urban areas who travel long distances to reach their educational institutions, ensuring that hunger never becomes an obstacle to learning.
Financial Outlay Increased to Over Rs 700 Crores
To support the massive operational scale of the expanded program, the state government has allocated an additional Rs 217.63 crore in the current fiscal year's budget. With this latest addition, the total budget for the Kamaraj Breakfast Scheme has risen to Rs 724 crore, reflecting the administration's firm commitment to children's well-being.
