Political circles in Tamil Nadu are abuzz with speculations of a massive realignment as Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), and the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) are reportedly engaged in serious back-channel talks for a potential political alliance. While no formal announcement has been made yet, insiders suggest that negotiations have advanced significantly, touching upon power-sharing and cabinet representation.
The biggest hurdle in this prospective alliance remains PMK's past equations with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with whom they contested the previous assembly elections. However, PMK's decision to maintain neutrality in the recent by-elections has added fuel to the fire, with political pundits viewing it as a calculated step towards distancing themselves from the old NDA fold and inching closer to the ruling TVK administration.
Sources indicate that key negotiators from both sides, including party leadership and political advisors, are fine-tuning the terms of the engagement. Reports suggest that TVK is willing to offer two cabinet positions to the PMK, including a prominent berth for senior party leader and legislator Soumya Anbumani, who commands a strong electoral mandate of her own.
For Chief Minister Vijay, shoring up numbers is crucial as the TVK had fallen slightly short of an absolute majority on its own, relying on smaller allies to form the government. Integrating a grounded regional party like the PMK could provide the administration with long-term stability and a formidable social coalition ahead of future political challenges.
