In a major administrative crackdown to streamline the Public Distribution System (PDS), authorities have cancelled thousands of ineligible ration cards in the region. The extensive verification drive was launched to weed out individuals who were wrongfully availing subsidized food grains meant strictly for the underprivileged and economically weaker sections of society.
Thorough Verification Drive Exposes Systemic Flaws
The district administration, in collaboration with the supply department and tehsil teams, conducted a comprehensive door-to-door and digital verification of existing ration cardholders. Over the past few weeks, officials scrutinized documents to identify households that failed to meet the eligibility criteria.
To the administration's surprise, approximately 47,000 ration cards were found to be wrongfully or fraudulently issued. These beneficiaries possessed resources well beyond the permissible limits for subsidized schemes. Acting swiftly on these findings, district officials ordered the immediate cancellation of all 47,000 ineligible cards to ensure that public resources are not diverted to undeserving individuals.
Strict Recovery and Accountability Measures
Beyond cancelling the permits, the administration has directed that financial recovery be initiated against individuals who illegally consumed subsidized rations over the years. Officials are calculating the market value of the grains distributed to these ineligible beneficiaries, and recovery notices will be issued accordingly.
Furthermore, the district magistrate has ordered an internal inquiry into how these fraudulent cards were issued in the first place. The investigation will examine the potential complicity of local supply department officials and clerical staff, promising strict departmental and legal action against anyone found shielding or facilitating the fraud.
