New Delhi/Ground Bureau — The ongoing war in Ukraine has completely changed the landscape of modern warfare, where technology and communication dictate the battlefield. Amidst this, concerns regarding the use of satellite-based internet service Starlink during the Russia-Ukraine conflict have sparked global debates. This technical and security issue has now reached the Indian parliament. Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has expressed deep concern over the matter, calling it an open warning for India's security apparatus. She emphasized the need to evaluate how safe it is to have the country's communication network controlled by foreign entities during wars or emergencies.
During the Ukraine conflict, reports highlighted how the control or disruption of satellite internet services could severely impact military strategy on the ground. These reports have alarmed defense experts and policymakers worldwide. As India currently processes approvals for space-based internet services, Ukraine's experience serves as a major lesson. Chaturvedi has urged the government to closely monitor these security aspects to avoid external pressures in the future.
