Indian Railways Scripts History in the Himalayas

Indian transport history has entered a golden era as high-speed trains conquer difficult mountainous terrains with unprecedented ease. The Vande Bharat Express operating between Jammu and Srinagar recently achieved a remarkable feat by maintaining a speed of 100 kilometers per hour at breathtaking altitudes. This successful trial has firmly established that modern engineering can bridge even the most challenging geographical barriers.

The speed trial was conducted under the strict supervision of railway authorities and technical experts across the 111-kilometer Katra-Banihal rail section. Previously restricted to lower speeds due to steep gradients and complex terrain, the maximum permissible speed for this entire corridor has now been officially raised to 100 kmph following rigorous safety assessments and infrastructure upgrades.

Engineering Marvel: The Mighty Chenab Rail Bridge

The bridge where the Vande Bharat clocked 100 kmph is an extraordinary engineering marvel situated 359 meters or 1,178 feet above the riverbed. Known as the world's highest railway arch bridge, it stands even taller than the iconic Eiffel Tower. Spanning approximately 1,315 meters in length, the structure is meticulously designed to withstand extreme weather conditions and high-velocity winds of up to 260 kmph, boasting a lifespan of 120 years.

Operating a high-speed train smoothly at such an extreme altitude demonstrates the advanced capabilities of modern Indian infrastructure development. Engineers overcame massive topographical challenges to lay tracks that ensure absolute safety and stability for passengers traveling through the treacherous terrain.

Anji Bridge and Passenger Benefits

Alongside the Chenab structure, the train also crossed the Anji Bridge—India's first cable-stayed railway bridge—at 100 kmph. Supported by 96 high-tensile cables and standing 331 meters above the valley floor, this bridge represents another crowning achievement of the USBRL project.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared footage of the successful trial, terming it a historic moment for the nation. With train speeds now optimized across this scenic corridor, passengers can look forward to significantly reduced travel times, enhanced comfort, and seamless connectivity between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley.
