Srinagar/New Delhi: Indian Railways has added another golden chapter to engineering history. As an on-the-ground field reporter for 'The Freelance', witnessing this mega-project firsthand highlights India's soaring global reputation in overcoming geographical and technical challenges. India's premier semi-high-speed train, 'Vande Bharat', has created a new record by successfully running at 100 kilometers per hour at an altitude of approximately 1,200 feet on the world's highest railway arch bridge.
The Chenab Bridge: Taller than the Eiffel Tower
Built 359 meters (approx. 1,200 feet) above the bed of the Chenab River in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, this arch bridge stands taller than the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris. Laying tracks and running a train at 100 Kmph in such difficult terrain was a massive logistical and engineering challenge. In our interactions with structural engineers, it was revealed that the bridge is specifically designed to withstand extreme wind pressures and seismic activities.
Rigorous Safety and Technical Testing
Prior to this successful trial, extensive safety tests were conducted. Advanced sensors were deployed to measure train balance, braking efficiency, and track stability amidst strong winds. Conducted under the supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), this trial proves that Indian Railways is not only ready to connect the country's most remote terrains but also stands at the forefront of modern global technology.
Regional Development and Strategic Significance
Locals and transport sector experts believe this milestone is much more than just a trial—it is a robust, all-weather connectivity lifeline linking the Kashmir Valley to the rest of the nation. As a crucial part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, it will significantly boost tourism and fortify India's strategic positioning.
"This is a moment of immense pride for every Indian. Running Vande Bharat at 100 Kmph at an altitude of 1,200 feet is a true testament to India's technological modernization." - Senior Railway Official
Dedication to the Nation
Following the successful trial, preparations for commercial train operations along this route are now in their final stages. According to 'The Freelance' investigation, Indian Railways is poised to break several more infrastructure records this year, proving that physical boundaries are shrinking before India's resolute engineering capabilities.
