Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly criticized a US agreement that allows Russia to resume selling diesel on international markets. He warned that such a move could pave the way for easing restrictions on Russian gas exports and other vital international sanctions.
Risk of Slippery Slope on Sanctions
Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the EU summit in Brussels, Zelenskyy stated that diesel-related agreements are unacceptable because they will inevitably lead to gas-related agreements. He warned that restrictions on gas and other commodities would eventually be lifted, trickling down to the banking system and specific individuals, thereby undermining the collective pressure on Moscow.
Starlink Operations and Air Defense
Addressing technological dependencies, Zelenskyy noted that SpaceX's Starlink satellite communication service has seen improved operations, though it has not been fully restored. He emphasized that Ukraine does not use Starlink for attacks on Russian territory, but rather relies on it to intercept jet-engine-powered Shahed drones sent by Russia. Disruptions in the service had previously compromised civilian safety and reduced the operational capability of Ukrainian forces.
On the topic of air security, Zelenskyy highlighted that European allies possess sufficient stockpiles of PAC-2 and PAC-3 Patriot missile interceptors to meet Ukraine's stated winter requirements. He also expressed optimism that Ukraine and its European partners would jointly develop their own version of the Freya anti-ballistic missile system.
