Zerodha Founders Make Major Investment in Viceroy Hotels

In a significant development within the corporate and financial circles, Zerodha founders Nitin Kamath and Nikhil Kamath have acquired a 6.72 percent stake in hospitality firm Viceroy Hotels. Market experts note that this strategic investment was executed during the September quarter, drawing considerable attention from market participants toward the company's future growth prospects.

According to the latest shareholding data, the acquisition was carried out through their dedicated investment entities, Kamath Associates and Nksquared. Following the revelation of this high-profile investment, retail and institutional interest in the stock surged. During Monday's trading session, Viceroy Hotels shares witnessed positive momentum, gaining nearly 2 percent to close at 130 rupees.

From Debt Burden to Revival: The Turnaround Story of Viceroy Hotels

Viceroy Hotels once faced severe financial distress due to mounting debt burdens. Under previous management, the company accumulated liabilities exceeding 1,150 crore rupees. Consequently, the firm was dragged into the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) under NCLT guidelines. There was a point when liquidation fears loomed large, leading to the suspension of trading in its shares.

However, a major turning point arrived in October 2023 when the NCLAT approved the resolution plan submitted by Aniruddha Agro Farms. Fresh capital was infused into the company, and financial support was extended through its subsidiary, Loco Hospitality. Following the successful implementation of the resolution plan, trading of Viceroy Hotels shares resumed on the NSE and BSE in April 2024.

Expanding Portfolio with High-End Hospitality Properties

Post-restructuring, Viceroy Hotels has been actively focusing on strengthening its core operations. Currently, the company operates prominent properties in Hyderabad, including Marriott and Courtyard by Marriott hotels. To meet corporate requirements and increase public shareholding, the company also launched a rights issue aimed at raising around 105 crore rupees.

Management believes that strengthening the capital structure will pave the way for accelerated business expansion. In December 2025, shareholders approved the acquisition of SLN Terminus Hotels and Resorts for approximately 206 crore rupees. Since this property operates executive apartments under the Marriott brand, the upcoming deal will significantly bolster Viceroy's asset portfolio and market reach.
