Major changes in LPG cylinder rules from October 1
Important news is coming in for domestic LPG consumers who receive subsidies on their cooking gas cylinders. According to the latest guidelines issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, completing biometric Aadhaar authentication (BAA) will become mandatory starting October 1, 2026, to book domestic LPG refills at subsidized retail prices.
This step aims to bring complete transparency to the cooking gas distribution system and ensure that government subsidies reach genuine and deserving families directly. Consumers who fail to complete this process within the stipulated deadline might face hurdles in receiving their regular gas subsidies.
Why is biometric authentication necessary?
The primary goal behind this mandate is to streamline the LPG subsidy framework and prevent any leakage. Biometric authentication ensures that subsidized LPG reaches only eligible households. It helps curb the diversion of subsidized domestic cylinders for commercial and industrial purposes, which has been a persistent challenge.
Additionally, the process helps in identifying and eliminating duplicate or ineligible connections from the database. The Ministry has emphasized that the objective is not to deprive any genuine family of LPG, but to make the delivery mechanism transparent and foolproof.
Current status of authentication across the country
According to official data released by the Petroleum Ministry, citizens have responded positively to the initiative. By September 19, approximately 27.43 करोड़ active domestic LPG consumers—representing about 89.9 percent of the total subscriber base—have already completed their biometric Aadhaar authentication.
Consumers who have already finished this process do not need to repeat it. They will continue receiving their refills seamlessly as before without any disruption.
How and where to complete biometric e-KYC
Consumers who have yet to complete their biometric authentication can easily do so before October 1. The government has made the process extremely convenient. Users can complete verification during cylinder home delivery, where delivery personnel use OMC mobile apps for on-the-spot verification.
Alternatively, consumers can visit their respective LPG distributor's store or complete the e-KYC process themselves from the comfort of their homes using official mobile applications provided by oil marketing companies.
