Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has crossed a historic milestone, completing 12 successful years since its inception in 2014. As the cornerstone of India's financial inclusion journey, the scheme has successfully brought millions of unbanked and underprivileged citizens into the formal financial ecosystem, providing them access to banking, credit, insurance, pension, and digital payments.
Phenomenal Growth: Total Accounts Cross 59 Crore
When launched, skeptics doubted the feasibility of providing bank accounts to every household in a vast and diverse nation like India. However, steady administrative efforts and targeted implementation proved critics wrong. Official data reveals that total PMJDY accounts surged from 14.72 crore in 2015 to an impressive 59.09 crore by August 19, 2026.
Out of these total accounts, a massive share of 45.95 crore accounts is located in rural and semi-urban areas, while urban and metropolitan areas account for 13.14 crore accounts. This demonstrates how deeply banking services have penetrated India's hinterlands.
Empowering Women Through Financial Inclusion
A remarkable aspect of the Jan Dhan revolution has been its strong focus on gender equality and women's empowerment. Traditionally, a large population of women in India lacked financial independence or individual bank accounts.
By August 19, 2026, women beneficiaries accounted for 32.92 crore of the total PMJDY accounts. Direct benefit transfers (DBT) directly into these accounts have bypassed intermediaries, eliminated corruption, and instilled deep financial confidence among women.
Surging Deposits and Rising Public Trust
The success of PMJDY is not just reflected in the number of opened accounts, but also in the growing savings habit among low-income families. Total deposits in Jan Dhan accounts have multiplied nearly 20 times, jumping from Rs 15,670 crore in March 2015 to Rs 3,16,514 crore by August 19, 2026, reflecting immense public trust in the formal banking system.
Digital Payments and Global Recognition
Account holders have been issued 41.29 crore RuPay debit cards as of August 2026, fueling the country's digital transaction growth. Global institutions like the IMF and the World Bank have repeatedly lauded India's financial inclusion model as a global benchmark for development.
