In verse 26 of the tenth chapter of the Gita, i.e., 'Vibhuti Yoga', Lord Shri Krishna himself told Arjuna about the importance of the Peepal tree. Lord Krishna said that among all the trees of the world, he himself is the Peepal i.e. Ashwattha. From this single verse, it becomes clear how high the spiritual level of the Peepal tree is and why it is considered the direct form of Lord Vishnu.
