A video shared on social media platform X by Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Susanta Nanda has drawn significant attention from wildlife enthusiasts and researchers alike. Captured in Odisha's renowned Similipal Tiger Reserve, the footage features rare black tigers (melanistic tigers) displaying their distinctive and unusual coat patterns.
Wildlife experts who have long studied Similipal's ecosystem note that this tiger population is largely isolated from other major tiger landscapes. This geographical isolation leads to inbreeding and genetic drift, allowing rare recessive mutations to manifest in their coat colors and physical patterns. The small founder population further amplifies the rate of these mutations.
Following the emergence of the video, internet users and wildlife photographers have expressed widespread awe, while conservationists continue to stress the importance of improving habitat connectivity to ensure genetic health. Officials and researchers view the protection of Similipal's unique melanistic tigers as a crucial priority for ongoing wildlife genetics research.
