Mahindra & Mahindra is reportedly accelerating its electric vehicle strategy by working on an all-electric avatar of its highly popular off-road SUV, the Mahindra Thar. Recently, a heavily camouflaged test mule of a new SUV was spotted undergoing road tests, triggering massive excitement across the automotive sector.
Industry insiders and spy shots suggest that the design of this upcoming electric SUV heavily draws inspiration from the Vision T Concept, which Mahindra showcased in South Africa in August 2025. The concept itself was deeply rooted in the Thar.e philosophy revealed back in 2023, showcasing the brand's futuristic design language.
Rugged Exterior and Futuristic Design Elements
The front fascia of the test vehicle features a wide, two-level patterned grille reminiscent of the Vision-T concept, accompanied by square-shaped LED headlights. Despite the camouflage, the boxy silhouette, flat clamshell-style bonnet, upright windscreen, and robust front bumper are clearly visible, retaining the timeless aggressive stance of the traditional Thar.
The side profile confirms a practical 5-door layout, paired with a flat roof and upright pillars that ensure ample cabin space. It features wide side steps running along the doors and large wheels, likely ranging between 19 to 20 inches, tailored for superior off-road performance.
Launch Timeline and Market Expectations
While Mahindra has not yet announced an official launch date for the Thar EV, frequent testing sightings indicate that the project is progressing rapidly. As more details regarding battery capacity, range, and interior features emerge, the Thar EV is expected to set a new benchmark in India's fast-growing electric vehicle ecosystem.
