Pioneering Chemists Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai Awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry

STOCKHOLM — The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Wednesday that the 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded jointly to French chemist Henri B. Kagan and Japanese chemist Kenso Soai. The prestigious award recognizes their pioneering contributions to the field of asymmetric catalysis, a transformative molecular craft that has revolutionized how complex pharmaceutical compounds and advanced materials are manufactured.

Asymmetric catalysis allows scientists to produce molecules in a specific three-dimensional orientation—known as handedness or chirality. In chemistry, two mirror-image versions of a molecule can possess drastically different biological effects; while one enantiomer may cure an ailment, its mirror twin can be inert or toxic. Before the breakthrough methodologies developed by Kagan and Soai in the late 20th century, separating these chiral forms was an inefficient, expensive, and environmentally hazardous process.

Henri B. Kagan, professor emeritus at the University of Paris-Sud, laid the groundwork with his revolutionary creation of catalytic asymmetric reduction using chiral diphosphine ligands, famously known as Kagan's dppz systems. Kenso Soai, professor at Tokyo University of Science, subsequently discovered profound amplification phenomena in asymmetric autocatalysis, demonstrating how a tiny initial chiral imbalance can be magnified into a pure handed product.

'The discoveries by Professors Kagan and Soai have given humanity microscopic molecular toolmakers with unprecedented precision,' stated Olof Ramström, chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry. 'Their work forms the backbone of modern drug discovery, making the industrial synthesis of life-saving therapeutics safer, cleaner, and drastically more efficient.'
