In a major development for India's banking sector, the Union Cabinet has officially cleared the strategic sale of IDBI Bank. Under this landmark deal, the government and the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) will divest a combined 60.72 percent stake in the bank to a subsidiary of the Canadian financial services firm Fairfax Financial Holdings. The total value of this transaction is estimated to be around 52,878.08 crore rupees.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its final nod to Fairfax as the strategic buyer. According to the approved structure, the Government of India will offload its 30.48 percent stake, while LIC will sell 30.24 percent of its holding. Following the transaction, the government will retain a 15 percent stake and LIC will hold 19 percent, maintaining a combined state presence of 34 percent in the institution. Officials noted that this transaction will constitute one of the largest foreign direct investments (FDI) in the country's financial landscape.
A Long-Awaited Process Since 2022
The disinvestment process for IDBI Bank was initially announced back in 2022. However, the transaction faced multiple regulatory delays, procedural hurdles, and pauses when initial bids failed to meet the government's expectations. Despite these roadblocks, the two-stage bidding process overseen by various government bodies has now successfully culminated in final cabinet approval, paving the way for a new chapter in the bank's operational history.
Surge in Stock Market Shares
Ahead of the formal cabinet announcement, IDBI Bank shares witnessed a notable rally in the stock market. The lender's stock jumped by nearly 13 percent during intraday trading sessions as market participants reacted positively to the impending structural changes. Financial analysts believe that this strategic partnership will enhance the bank's operational capabilities, though investors are continually advised to consult financial advisors before making investment decisions.
