Bollywood's megastar Amitabh Bachchan is an inspiration to millions, but reaching this iconic status required years of relentless struggle. Recently, while interacting on a popular quiz show stage, Big B opened up about his early days in the film industry, revealing how his physical appearance and height became major hurdles when he was trying to secure film roles.
When Height and Face Shape Became Hurdles
During a conversation with a contestant, Big B recalled the quirky backstory behind his signature hairstyle and sideburns. He shared that when he first entered the film industry, producers frequently criticized him on two fronts. First, they claimed his height was too tall, arguing that no leading lady would agree to work opposite him. Second, they pointed out that his face appeared too small.
To compensate for his small facial structure and give it a fuller look, the actor decided to grow out his sideburns. Ironically, the very height and distinct hairstyle that once drew criticism and rejection eventually became the defining trademarks of his powerful personality and cinematic aura.
From Struggles to Becoming the 'Angry Young Man'
Amitabh Bachchan made his acting debut in 1969 with the film 'Saat Hindustani'. His initial films failed to make a mark at the box office, and he struggled to find mainstream fame. However, the 1973 action drama 'Zanjeer' completely transformed his career trajectory, turning him into an overnight superstar and giving birth to the iconic 'Angry Young Man' persona.
Following 'Zanjeer', he delivered monumental hits like 'Deewaar', 'Sholay', 'Amar Akbar Anthony', and 'Don', eventually sharing screen space with all the leading heroines of the industry. Even today, Big B continues to remain active in cinema and television, inspiring generations of fans.
