Television actor Arjun Bijlani and his wife Neha Swami have finally addressed the massive controversy surrounding a t-shirt worn by Neha. The apparel, which featured Arabic text alongside a cartoon graphic, drew immense backlash on social media, with critics questioning the use of religious terms on clothing. Following the uproar, the couple released an official statement to clear the air.
How the Controversy Started
The issue gained traction after Neha Swami attended a birthday party in Mumbai wearing a casual t-shirt adorned with a Mickey Mouse graphic and some Arabic script. As her pictures circulated online, social media users claimed that the text contained revered religious words. This sparked a heated online debate regarding the sensitivity of using such text on casual wear.
'We Had No Idea What It Meant': Couple Apologizes
In their joint statement, Arjun and Neha explained that the t-shirt was a gift from a fan at a mall in Bangkok. They stressed that they had zero knowledge of what was written on it or what the words translated to. Expressing deep respect for all faiths and beliefs, they emphasized that there was never any intention to hurt anyone's sentiments. They issued an unconditional apology for the inadvertent mistake and promised to be much more careful with gifted items in the future.
Condemning Online Trolling and Threats
The couple also expressed distress over the severe trolling, abuse, and threats directed at Neha. While acknowledging that religious sentiments run deep, they maintained that resorting to online harassment and intimidation is completely unacceptable. They urged the public to approach the situation with maturity, understanding, and mutual respect.
