Finally Overcoming the Asian Games Jinx: Shooter Elavenil Valarivan Lifts the Heavy Burden

At 27, rifle shooter Elavenil Valarivan has firmly established herself as one of the most experienced members of the Indian shooting squad. Having represented India at two Olympic Games (Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024), she has numerous World Cup, Asian, and World Championship medals under her belt across both junior and senior categories. However, a lingering narrative had followed her regarding her performances on grand stages like the Asian Games and Olympics. That narrative shifted remarkably at the recent Asian Games in Japan, where she finally shook off the immense pressure.

A Boost in Confidence and Shifting Perspectives

Popularly known as 'Ila' among her peers, the shooter shares that her confidence has skyrocketed following this success. "I am excited to build an even better version of myself for upcoming competitions. This success has massively boosted my self-belief," she notes. Valarivan also grabbed attention for her unique rifle-shaped stud earrings and traditional bugdi earrings, which many fans consider her lucky charm.

Rigorous Discipline and Team Support

Born in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, and raised in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, since she was three, Elavenil proudly considers herself a Gujarati at heart. Her primary training base has been the Sri Ramachandra Centre for Sports Science in Chennai, associated with Gagan Narang's Gun for Glory Academy. Maintaining her spot in India's fiercely competitive shooting squad through trials for nearly a decade required immense discipline and sacrifices, including being away from family for months.

Looking Ahead to the 2028 Olympics

With the Asian Games behind her, Valarivan has set her sights on new horizons. November brings the World Championship, followed by the grueling challenge of securing Olympic quotas for India. As one of the senior figures in the shooting contingent now, she smiles and says, "I am now the 'didi' of the gang, and I need to be responsible."
