Understanding the Link Between Rare Genes and Lung Cancer
Not smoking does not mean you are completely free from the risk of lung cancer. A major new study involving over 3.3 million people has found that a rare genetic variation, EGFR T790M, increases the risk of lung cancer by about 25 times in people who carry this variant.
For individuals who have never smoked but carry this rare gene, the risk of cancer can be up to 62 times higher compared to those without it. However, researchers emphasize that these statistics do not mean that everyone carrying the gene will definitely develop cancer.
Insights from the Landmark Study
Researchers from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and 23andMe analyzed genetic data from over 3.3 million individuals of European descent. They focused on EGFR T790M, an extremely rare variant of the EGFR gene. The results showed that carriers had a significantly elevated risk of developing lung disease, particularly among non-smokers.

Should Healthy People Get Tested?
At present, experts do not recommend routine testing for healthy individuals based solely on this study. Current screening guidelines remain focused on age and smoking history. Future research, such as the ongoing INHERIT study, will help determine if genetic screening can benefit high-risk family groups.
