While Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great pomp across the country, Indian scientists stationed thousands of miles away in Antarctica marked the festival in an extraordinary way. Scientists at the southernmost continent crafted a Lord Ganesha idol out of snow, offered prayers, and performed the immersion ritual right there in the frozen landscape. A video capturing this unique celebration has gone viral on social media.
The video was shared on Instagram by Anirudh Dhar, associated with the Goa-based National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR). The footage begins with the snow-covered expanse around the Maitri station, where a group of scientists can be seen coming together to celebrate the festival.
Carving Ganesha from Snow and Eco-Friendly Immersion
The scientists meticulously built a small Ganesha idol using the surrounding snow, decorating it gracefully with flowers and garlands. Following this, traditional prayers were held inside the station, echoing chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' across the frozen wasteland. The festivities concluded with an eco-friendly immersion of the snow-sculpted deity.
Keeping Traditions Alive in Extreme Conditions
Despite the harsh -5°C temperatures and extreme isolation, the team ensured the festival felt just like home. After the rituals, the scientists gathered to enjoy handmade modaks together, bringing warmth and a touch of home to the frigid environment.
